Talk:Secret Taffs Well

Access notes update June 2023

The current access notes are optimistic regarding how fast/easy the approach is, especially given significant regrowth of plants/brambles since the vegetation was cleared during Lockdown. The 50m is also nowhere near the thre distance from Pine Tree to the cut back uphill

Suggested update to the Access notes:

Change from 5 min to 10 min

Use the small path to the left of the gate at Taffs Well parking spot. Follow this until it ends at the base of a slabby buttress (51.537149, -3.258869 "Pine Tree").

From the slab, drop downhill - some cut branches show where vegetation has been cleared in the past, but there has been significant regrowth making the path hard to see. After passing an abandoned campsite, the path continues immediately adjacent to the A470 slip road fence line. After 90m from the slab (51.537764,-3.259715), cut briefly uphill and then to the left as vegetation dictates, soon passing a low cave.

Look out for a yellow poly rope, which will guide you towards a scramble up a steep bank and a series of rock steps (not suitable for unassisted dogs). You will know when you have arrived.

Sounds about right Will. Only it's not at the foot of Pine Tree, but some easy bolted routes by dai Emmanuel. Hopefully Robin will be cutting the path back over the summer as he has now purchased an electric chainsaw.

Hmm - both of the photos here https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/crags/taffs_well-1023/pine_tree-33452#photos look like the "slabby buttress" - so if this isn't Pine Tree, what is?

Out of the pit and PPPPP

Makes sense. As an area newbie, I saw pine tree mentioned in the original approach description, found the mis-labelled photos of OOTP & PPPPPPPP on UKC, and made the wrong assumption! I've removed the reference to Pine Tree, leaving only the coordinates, which should prevent confusion.
